Best apps and websites to practise for motorcycle licence (category A) theory in Belgium (2026): honest comparison

Driving license A
Driving license A

Anyone wanting a motorcycle licence in Belgium — whether A1, A2 or A — must pass the same theory exam. The format is identical to the car (category B) exam: 50 questions, 41/50 required, 15 seconds per question. The subject matter differs, however: motorcycle-specific rules, riding safety, vehicle technology and behaviour in complex situations.

In this article we compare the available apps and websites for motorcycle licence A theory honestly on 7 concrete criteria — so you know which tool best prepares you for the real GOCA exam.

Theory exam for motorcycle licence A in Belgium: the facts

Applies to A1, A2 and A — the theory exam is identical in format and content for all three. 50 multiple-choice questions at GOCA exam level. Minimum 41/50 correct. 15 seconds per question. 5 questions are serious offences: wrong answer costs 5 points, 2 serious faults = immediately failed. Cost: 19 euros per attempt. Theory certificate valid for 3 years. Theory lessons are not compulsory — you may study entirely independently. Progressive exemption: if you have held an A1 licence for at least 2 years, you do not need to sit a new theory exam when moving up to A2. Same applies from A2 to A.

A1, A2 or A: what is the difference for the theory exam?

Category

Motorcycle type — theory exam — minimum age for licence

A1

Motorcycle max. 125cc / 11 kW — theory exam: identical to A2/A — licence from age 18

A2

Motorcycle max. 35 kW — theory exam: identical to A1/A — licence from age 20

A (direct)

Unlimited power — theory exam: identical — licence from age 24

A (progressive via A2)

Unlimited power — no new theory exam required — licence from age 22

A (progressive via A1)

Important: the theory exam is identical for A1, A2 and A

Whether you want A1, A2 or A — you sit the same theory exam with the same 50 questions, the same pass mark and the same 15 seconds per question. There is no separate A1 exam or A2 exam. If you have held an A1 or A2 licence for at least 2 years, you do not need to sit a new theory exam when moving to the next category.

What makes a good practice tool for motorcycle licence A theory?

The motorcycle licence A theory exam contains motorcycle-specific questions not found in the category B exam. A good practice tool must cover these fully:

•        Motorcycle-specific questions: Riding dynamics, fall risk, clutch behaviour, two-wheel braking technique, visibility on the road

•        Vehicle technology: Tyre pressure, chain tension, oil, brake fluid, lighting — pre-departure technical checks

•        Protective equipment: Helmet (ECE 22-05 or higher), gloves, boots, protective clothing — which are compulsory?

•        GOCA exam level: Not all tools contain motorcycle-specific questions at the level of the real GOCA exam

•        15-second time limit: Exactly as in the real exam — non-negotiable

•        Serious offences flagged separately: 5-point system correctly represented

Platform: Website (browser)     Price: Completely free

Strengths

•        Completely free without registration

•        Contains practice questions for category A and B

•        No advertisements

•        Immediately available without an account

Weaknesses

•        Motorcycle-specific A questions are underrepresented

•        No 15-second time limit per question

•        No distinction between minor and serious offences

•        No error analysis per topic

•        No risk perception test

•        Not optimised for mobile

•        No free PDF of the motorcycle theory

Verdict: Useful as a first introduction. But for serious preparation for the GOCA motorcycle licence A exam it lacks the time limit, the motorcycle-specific question depth and the error analysis.

2. iTheorie Belgium (iOS and Android)

Platform: iOS and Android     Price: Free with advertisements / paid without

Strengths

•        Available for category B and A

•        Works offline

•        Mock exams included

•        Widely known

Weaknesses

•        Advertisements appear during mock exams — breaks concentration

•        No 15-second time limit per question

•        Motorcycle-specific A questions less in-depth than on real exam

•        No distinction between minor and serious offences

•        No risk perception test

•        No free PDF of the theory

Verdict: Reasonable as a free starting point. But advertisements during mock exams and the absence of a time limit make it less suitable as preparation for the real GOCA exam.

What makes the motorcycle licence A theory exam different from category B

•        Riding dynamics: How does a motorcycle behave when braking, cornering and performing avoidance manoeuvres? What is the fall risk under overloading?

•        Vehicle technology: Before departure: tyre pressure, chain tension, oil, brake fluid, lighting — these are standard exam questions

•        Protective equipment: Which equipment is compulsory? Helmet (ECE 22-05 or higher), gloves, boots, protective jacket — and what are the consequences of non-compliance?

•        Visibility: Motorcyclists are less visible than cars. Which riding positions and behaviours increase visibility?

•        Weather conditions: How do you adapt riding behaviour in rain, wind, slippery roads and limited visibility?

Warning: tools without motorcycle-specific A questions are insufficient

Some free tools offer 'motorcycle licence A theory' but in practice provide the same questions as category B — without the motorcycle-specific topics. Anyone preparing this way will miss a significant portion of the exam content. Always check whether the tool contains genuine motorcycle-specific questions for A1, A2 and A.

Checklist: what should a good practice tool for motorcycle licence A offer?

•        Motorcycle-specific questions: Riding dynamics, vehicle technology, protective equipment — all fully covered?

•        GOCA exam level: Situation questions, sub-signs, combination questions at the level of the real exam?

•        15-second time limit: Is the pace of the real exam simulated?

•        Serious offences: Are those 5 questions flagged separately with the 5-point system?

•        Error analysis per topic: After each session, can you see which topics are your weakest points?

•        Risk perception test: Included? Compulsory in Flanders for the practical exam

•        Theory available: Can you read the complete motorcycle theory — and download it as a PDF?
