Everything you need to know about the theory test for driving licences A and B in Belgium, the hazard perception test, and how RAPP helps you pass.
About RAPP
What is RAPP?
RAPP is a Belgian online learning platform that helps candidates prepare for the theory test for licence A and B, and for the risk perception test of the practical exam. The platform combines theory, practice questions, realistic mock exams and a personal learning coach in one environment; no installation required, available on smartphone, tablet and computer.
Who founded RAPP?
RAPP was founded in 2025 by Tars Van Der Vaerent, Daan Van Isterdael & Nick Van Isterdael, three Belgian technology consultants. They validated the concept during their MBA at Vlerick Business School, where their thesis formed the basis for the platform. RAPP was featured in April 2026 by De Tijd in the Jong Geweld section.
Who is RAPP intended for?
RAPP is intended for anyone who wants to pass the theoretical & practical driving test in Belgium: candidates getting their driving licence for the first time, students who want to pass in the fastest and highest-quality way, and people who failed before and are trying again. The platform works for licence A (motorbike) and licence B (car), in Dutch, French and English.
Is RAPP officially recognised by the Belgian government?
RAPP is not an official exam centre and does not replace the official theory test. It is a learning platform that prepares candidates for the exam at a GOCA-recognised Belgian exam centre. The content is fully based on the official Belgian Highway Code and is actively updated with every legislative change.
In which languages is RAPP available?
RAPP is available in Dutch, French and English. This means candidates from the Flemish Region, the Brussels-Capital Region and the Walloon Region can study in their own language.
Does RAPP also work for licence A (motorbike)?
Yes. RAPP offers a complete theory course, practice questions and mock exams for both licence A and licence B. The content for licence A is specifically tailored to the motorcycle theory test in Belgium.
Is RAPP actively updated?
Yes. The RAPP team actively tracks changes to the Belgian Highway Code and updates the content with every update, including the new traffic rules that come into force from 2026.
Where is RAPP based?

Features & platform
What can I do with RAPP?
With RAPP you can learn the full theory for driving licence categories A and B, do practice questions per chapter, take realistic mock exams, train the hazard perception test, and track your progress via the personal learning coach. Practice routes will soon be added too, to help you prepare for your driving lessons as effectively as possible.
What is RAPP's learning coach?
The learning coach is a smart study tool that optimises users' study method. It automatically keeps track per chapter of how well you score, shows which weak points you have, and gives targeted exercises so you study more efficiently and pass faster. Instead of repeating everything from scratch, you focus on what you really have not yet mastered.
What are practice routes and when will they be available?
Practice routes are a new feature that lets candidates generate ideal practice routes to prepare for their driving lessons as efficiently and purposefully as possible. With this, RAPP is expanding its offering from theory to the full journey towards a driving licence. The exact launch date will be announced later.
Do I need to download an app to use RAPP?
No. RAPP works directly in the browser on your smartphone, tablet or computer. No installation is needed. You can use RAPP on iOS and Android, and on any desktop via the browser.
Can I use RAPP on my smartphone and computer?
Yes. RAPP works on all devices via the browser. You can start on your smartphone and continue on your computer, or vice versa; your progress is tracked.
How realistic are the mock exams in RAPP?
The mock exams in RAPP are designed with the same structure, level of difficulty and scoring as the official Belgian theory test. For driving licence B that means: 50 questions, of which you must answer at least 41 correctly to pass.
Can I see where I make mistakes?
Yes. RAPP shows, per chapter and per practice session, where you make mistakes and which themes need extra attention. The learning coach uses that data to suggest targeted exercises.
Theory test for driving licence B
How does the category B driving licence theory test work in Belgium?
The category B driving licence theory test is taken on a computer in an approved test centre in Belgium. You get 50 questions that are read out and appear on the screen. After they are read out, you have limited time to answer. You must answer at least 41 of the 50 questions correctly to pass.
How many mistakes are you allowed to make on the category B driving licence theory test?
You may make a maximum of 9 mistakes on the category B driving licence theory test. Ordinary mistakes cost 1 point. Mistakes on serious offences or questions about speed cost 5 points. This means that one mistake on a serious offence can have a huge impact on your score.
How many questions are there on the category B driving licence theory test?
The category B driving licence theory test consists of 50 questions. You must give at least 41 correct answers to pass.
How long does the category B driving licence theory test take?
The category B driving licence theory test takes around 30 to 45 minutes on average, depending on how quickly you answer. Each question is read out and you then have limited time to answer.
Where can I take the category B driving licence theory test in Belgium?
You can take the category B driving licence theory test at an approved GOCA test centre in Belgium. You book online via their website and choose a location and date that suit you.
How much does the category B driving licence theory test cost?
The cost of the category B driving licence theory test at an approved test centre varies. Contact your test centre or consult the GOCA website for the current rates.
How long is the theory certificate valid in Belgium?
The theory certificate (proof that you have passed the theory test) is valid for a limited time in Belgium. After passing, you have a certain period in which to also pass the practical test. Consult the official Belgian regulations or the test centre for the exact validity period, as this may change.
Why do so many Belgians fail the theory test?
More than half of Belgian candidates fail the theory test on their first attempt. The main reasons are: insufficient practice with realistic exam questions, too little understanding of traffic situations (rather than simply knowing the rules), and unfamiliarity with the exam structure and time pressure. Candidates who only read the theory without taking mock tests are at a much higher risk of failing.
What are the most common mistakes on the category B driving licence theory test?
The most common mistakes are: misjudging right-of-way situations, recognising traffic signs but applying them incorrectly in a situation, answering too quickly without reading the question fully, hesitating in similar situations, and not taking sufficient account of exceptions in the traffic rules.
What if I fail the category B driving licence theory test?
If you fail the category B driving licence theory test, you can take it again. There is no mandatory waiting period, but you will have to pay the exam fee again. RAPP helps you study in a focused way for the areas where you previously made mistakes, so that you can pass next time.
Has the category B driving licence theory test become more difficult?
Yes. The Belgian government has made the theory test stricter in recent years. The questions increasingly test your understanding of traffic situations rather than simply your knowledge of the rules. That partly explains the high failure rate.
Theory test for driving licence A
How does the theory test for driving licence A differ from driving licence B?
The theory test for driving licence A (motorcycle) differs from driving licence B (car) in the specific subject matter. Driving licence A places more emphasis on motorcycle-specific traffic situations, the technical knowledge of the motorcycle, and the risks that motorbikes bring to traffic. The exam structure (computer, accredited exam centre, multiple choice) is similar.
Can I study for driving licences A and B at the same time in RAPP?
Yes. RAPP offers separate courses for driving licence A and driving licence B. You can follow both with one account.
Risk perception test
What is the hazard perception test?
The hazard perception test is a compulsory part of the practical driving test for category B in Belgium. You watch five short traffic clips of about thirty seconds each. After each clip, you must indicate which hazards you spotted, with four possible answers. There may be several correct answers. You have fifteen seconds per question.
How is the hazard perception test scored?
The hazard perception test uses a guess-correction scoring system. A correct answer earns +1 point, a wrong answer costs -1 point, and not ticking anything gives 0 points. Your total score is converted to a mark out of 10. You pass if you score at least 6 out of 10. Tip: only click what you really saw — guessing lowers your score.
When do you take the hazard perception test?
You take the hazard perception test before your practical driving test with the examiner. You must pass the hazard perception test to be allowed to move on to the practical part of the driving test.
Where do you take the hazard perception test?
The hazard perception test is organised at GOCA test centres. You book your practical driving test online via the GOCA website and then take this test before you start your practical driving test. You can take the test in Dutch, French or German.
How do I practise the hazard perception test?
With RAPP, you practise the hazard perception test with realistic traffic situations that closely resemble the official exam: junctions, vulnerable road users, unexpected manoeuvres and limited visibility. You start with one free practice test. With Premium, you can practise without limits.
Why is the hazard perception test difficult?
The hazard perception test requires a different kind of attention from the theory test. You have to recognise hazards quickly and accurately in moving images, not in written questions. Candidates who are not familiar with the format (the fifteen-second time pressure per question, the scoring system for guesses, the type of situations) consistently make more mistakes. Practising with realistic clips is the only effective preparation.

How long do I need to study for the Category B theory test?
The study time required varies from person to person, but most candidates who study purposefully need one to three weeks. Anyone who studies for an hour every day and combines this with practice questions and mock exams is usually well prepared after two weeks. RAPP's learning coach helps you make the most of that time as efficiently as possible.
What is the best way to study for the theory test?
The most efficient approach consists of four steps: first understand the theory (don’t memorise it by heart), then practise by chapter, analyse mistakes with the learning coach, and finally take full mock exams under time pressure. This approach builds understanding rather than simply memorising facts.
Is reading the theory alone enough to pass?
No. Candidates who only read the theory without practising fail far more often. The theory test assesses understanding of traffic situations, not just factual knowledge. You need to be able to apply the rules in concrete, sometimes misleading contexts. Practice questions and mock exams are essential.
How do I use RAPP if I have an exam in one week?
With one week to go, a structured approach is crucial. Days 1-2: work through the full theory in RAPP. Days 3-4: practice questions by chapter, identify weak points via the learning coach. Days 5-6: focused practice on weak topics + first mock exams. Day 7: take as many mock exams as possible (minimum 5) and spend the day relaxed.
Can I also use RAPP if I failed before?
Absolutely. RAPP is also for candidates who have failed before and are trying again. The learning coach helps you focus specifically on the parts where you made mistakes before, so you don't run into the same problems again.

What makes RAPP different from other driving licence apps in Belgium?
RAPP combines five elements in one platform that others offer separately or do not offer at all: a complete theory course for A and B, practice questions per chapter, realistic mock exams, hazard perception training, and a personal learning coach that identifies your weak points. On top of that: no subscription, three languages, and soon also practical routes. The focus is on truly understanding, not blind repetition.
Is RAPP better than a traditional driving licence book?
A traditional paper book gives you the theory, but no feedback, no practice questions tailored to the real exam format, and no insight into where you make mistakes. RAPP replaces the book and adds active learning. In 2026, studying with a paper book as the only preparation is insufficient for the Belgian theory exam.
Does RAPP plan to expand to other countries?
Yes. RAPP is currently exploring how it can enter the Dutch market. The ambition is to become the obvious choice at European level for anyone who wants to get a driving licence.
