What is the risk perception test?

What is the risk perception test?

The hazard perception test is part of the practical driving test for category B in Belgium.
With this test, they want to assess how well you recognise risks in traffic. It is not about knowledge of traffic rules, but about insight, reaction speed and alertness.

You watch five short traffic clips of about thirty seconds each. After each clip, you are asked “What did you see?” with four answer options. There may be several correct answers. You have fifteen seconds to answer before the next clip starts. Please note! In Wallonia the exam is slightly different. Here, you click while the clip is playing

How does the scoring work?

The test uses a guessing correction system. That means:

  • Correct answer clicked = +1 point

  • Wrong answer clicked = –1 point

  • Click nothing = 0 points

Tip: do not just guess. Wrong answers lower your score. Only click what you really saw. Your total score is converted to 10 points. You pass if you score at least 6 out of 10.

Why does the hazard perception test exist?

The hazard perception test assesses your ability to recognise danger before it is too late. In real traffic, it is crucial that you:

  • notice in time that a pedestrian wants to cross,

  • anticipate a car that suddenly brakes,

  • or react to a cyclist coming out of a side street.

In other words: the test shows how safely and attentively you drive.

When do you have to take the hazard perception test?

You take the hazard perception test after your theory test and before your practical test with the examiner.
You must pass the test to be allowed to move on to the practical part.

The test is organised at the GOCA test centres.
You can book online via their website and take the test in Dutch, French or German.
