A major update to the Belgian Highway Code is coming. From 1 September 2026, new rules will apply for drivers, cyclists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians. The current Highway Code has been in place for nearly 50 years, so it was high time for an update.

In this article, you will get a first glimpse of what is coming. This way, you can already prepare!

What is changing?

More freedom for cyclists and pedestrians

  • At some intersections, there will be "square green"u0012: cyclists and pedestrians will be allowed to cross in all directions at the same time.

  • Cyclists will be allowed to pass stationary traffic in certain situations.

New rules for motorcyclists

  • Motorcyclists may use the emergency lane in traffic jams, but only under strict conditions (low speed, small speed difference).

  • Parking rules are becoming stricter: perpendicular parking is no longer allowed unless explicitly indicated.

More traffic signs

  • There will be more than 45 new signs, including those for cargo bikes, shared vehicles, and warnings for traffic jams, fog, or slippery conditions.

Tighter controls

  • Automatic cameras that detect mobile phone usage behind the wheel.

  • More route checks and enforcement.

What do you need to know?

The exact details will be further elaborated. Some regulations may still be adjusted and each region (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels) can place its own emphasis. But one thing is certain: the Highway Code will be completely renewed, and you will feel it during your driving lessons and exam.
